Camp Rock Soundtrack Rewview

Being a fan of High School Musical, I was to say the least skeptical about the Disney Channels newest original movie, ‘Camp Rock’ featuring the Jonas Brothers and introducing Demi Lovato. In my mind, Disney has more that capitalized on High School Musical, and it’s stars (excluding Lucas Grabeel – who is 10 times the heartthrob Zac Effron is), but to actually rip off their own movie… I had no intensions of seeing it, let alone buying the soundtrack. Then a few days ago I was at a store called The Paintin’ Place (a paint it yourself pottery studio in Camarillo) where my BFF Stephanie works. Radio Disney’s top 30 Countdown was on and it seemed that the cast of Camp Rock dominated the count down. Demi Lovato and Joe Jonas’ ‘This is Me’ must’ve played five times in the four hours I was at the shop. It’s actually a beautiful song. The Joe-Bros ‘Play My Music’ is catchy and the movie ensembles’ ‘We Rock!’ is just plain fun. I had new hope for this movie, so, I bought the soundtrack. Joe Jonas’ “Gotta Find You’ is a good showcase piece for his voice, and actually does well as a stand alone pop song. New comer Jordan Francis sings ‘Hasta La Vista’ and ‘Start the Party’ two Hip-pop songs. He has a good voice, and good rhythm, though the songs are not super challenging, they’re fun. Meaghan Martin who sings ‘ Too Cool’ and ‘2 stars’ is the films bad girl. Her songs are fun, but forgettable. Her voice reminds me of Pizzazz from Jem and the Holograms. Aaron Doyle sings ‘What it Takes’ and ‘Our Time is Here’ With Demi and Meaghan. Though, ‘What it Takes’ is probably the worst song on the album (by no fault of the singer who has a great voice) ‘Our Time is Here’ is very beautiful, another stand alone pop song. All in all the soundtrack is not High School Musical, but that is good, it is not supposed to be. Despite one or two forgettable tracks, the album is good and worth the buy. It gives me even more hope for the film.
